Pictured here is the Mt. Pleasant Methodist's building located in the Newburg community in the eastern portion of Franklin County. It is one of two church buildings in Franklin County to be listed on the “Hallelujah Trail,” which is a group of 32 historical church sites across north Alabama.

The church was founded in 1824 and has been an integral part of the Newburg community since. The current building was erected shortly after the Civil War. Confederate soldiers camped on the grounds during the war, local historians say.

The cemetery adjacent to the church captures much of the community’s history as well. The cemetery is the burial site for a young girl killed by a mad dog in the early 1900s and also contains the graves of a mother and seven of her children that were killed in a tornado near the church in 1921.

Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church is located at the intersection of Franklin 624 and Franklin 87, just off of Alabama 24. It was added to the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage on April 11, 1984.
